Hydroelectric power plant Ozalj “Munjara” is the oldest continental hydroelectric power plant in Croatia. It was built and started running in 1908 in order to power Karlovac public lighting. The power plant was constructed on a natural waterfall in the middle of Ozalj.
It was built according to the blueprints of the city civil engineer Valerijan Rieszner and it owes its historical architectonic appearance to the famous Austrian architect Hermann Bollé. Nikola Tesla was the one who advised the local administration for years and “blessed” the construction of Munjara with his ideas. From the moment it was put into operation until today, it has not stopped working – even in the most difficult, wartime moments of its past. The building is a cultural heritage under the surveillance of Department for the Protection of Cultural Heritage and Ministry of culture and media of Republic of Croatia.
